ISMEO is pleased to announce that Simone Mantellini, Director of the UNIBO/ISMEO Archaeological Mission in Uzbekistan, had the honor of meeting with President Sergio Mattarella during his visit to Samarkand on November 11, 2023.
After official meetings in Tashkent, President Mattarella visited the ancient capital of Sogdiana, and later the Timurid capital, where he admired two iconic monuments, the Registan Square and the monumental necropolis of Shah-i Zinda.
President Mattarella was introduced to the results and activities of the UNIBO/ISMEO Archaeological Mission through an exhibition space of three panels and a selection of artifacts from the excavation of Kafir Kala, specially arranged inside the Sher Dor Madrasa in the Registan complex. President Mattarella showed great interest in the city’s historical-monumental heritage and expressed satisfaction with the twenty-year work carried out as part of the Italo-Uzbek project.
